Current Events

On January 5, 2013 Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA Dallas Mavericks, tweeted "I'm sorry NBA fans. I've tried for 13 yrs to fix the officiating in this league and I have failed miserably. Any suggestions? I need help." This tweet cost him $50,000 and went on his "TAB" of fines issued to him by the league. Something similar happened when Larry Johnson, The Chiefs running back, tweeted a gay slur and was fined for $600,000. I think Twitter is very useful and has many perks. It is great for gaining current news, the weather conditions and even celebrity gossip. I think some people abuse it though. Every American is given the right of free speech under the First Amendment. The First Amendment does not however, protect speech that leads to illegal activity and/or imminent violence, obscenity, defamation, and libel. I don't appreciate when people abuse their rights. Our founding fathers fought hard to guarantee us these freedoms and I think Americans get greedy sometimes with them. I hope one day people will learn that not every opinion or rude comment they are thinking in their heads needs to be voiced.
